What are Shopify bundles? Types, examples and how to set them up

June 4, 2026Oscar Ortiz9 min read

A Shopify bundle is, put simply, a package of two or more products you sell together as a single offer — almost always with a discount or some extra value. If you've ever wondered what a bundle is and why every store that sells well uses them, this guide clears it up: the types that sell best, why they work, and how to create them in your store, even without writing a single line of code.

Quick answer

A Shopify bundleis a package of two or more products you sell together as a single offer, almost always with a discount or extra value (also called a combo, kit, set, or pack). The five types that sell best are: fixed, mix & match, BOGO, volume, and gift boxes. You can create them with the free native "Shopify Bundles" app (fixed bundles only, no discounts), with automatic discounts, or with a no-code app like Comboofor mix & match, volume pricing, and automatic discounts included.

Shopify bundles: what they are and how to use them to sell more
A bundle groups several products into a single offer — and lifts the value of every order.

What is a bundle (and why do people call it a combo or kit)?

In e-commerce, a bundle is a set of products packaged as a single unit of sale. People call it a thousand things — combo, kit, set, or pack — but the logic is the same: instead of selling one thing, you group several and give the customer a clear reason to take them together.

That incentive can be a lower price than buying separately, a free gift, a complete experience ("your whole routine in one order"), or simply the convenience of not having to pick product by product. A well-built bundle feels like a better deal, and that perception is what drives conversion.

The types of bundles that sell best

Not all bundles work the same way. These are the formats that convert best and what each one is for:

Bundle typeWhat it isBest for
Fixed bundleA predefined combination of products at a special price.Classic sets: "complete routine", "starter kit".
Mix & matchThe customer picks X products from a group ("build your own box").Catalogs with variety: candles, snacks, cosmetics.
BOGO / buy-and-get"Buy 2, get 1", 2-for-1, or a free gift with purchase.Moving inventory and seasonal promos.
Volume / quantityMore savings the more units ("3 = 10% off").Consumables and repeat buys: coffee, supplements.
Gift box / kitA set presented as a gift or experience.Special occasions: Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, the holidays.

1. Fixed bundles

You decide which products go in the package and at what price. It's the most common bundle and the easiest to communicate: the customer sees the complete set and buys without a second thought. Perfect for "starter kits" or combinations you already know work well together.

2. Mix & match ("build your own box")

Here the customer picks, say, "3 products from this collection" and builds their own combo. It converts really well because you give them control and the feeling of something personalized. We cover it in depth in this guide to mix & match in Shopify.

3. BOGO / buy-and-get

The classic "2-for-1", "buy 2, get 1 free", or "free gift with purchase". They work wonderfully for moving inventory you want to clear and for seasonal campaigns, because the savings are so easy to understand.

4. Volume or quantity

The discount grows with the quantity: "buy 2 and save 5%, buy 3 and save 10%". It's ideal for repeat-purchase products or consumables, where the customer is going to buy again anyway — so you pull that forward into a single order.

5. Gift boxes and kits

The same bundle, but presented as an experience or a gift. These fly off the shelves around Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, and the holidays. Here the perceived value matters more than the discount: people pay for the presentation and the convenience of gifting something ready-made.

Why do bundles make you sell more?

  • They raise the average order value (AOV): the customer takes more in a single purchase, without you paying for more traffic.
  • They increase perceived value: a package feels like a better deal than buying product by product.
  • They help move inventory: you pair a hero product with others you want to shift.
  • They improve margin per order: you spread shipping and acquisition costs across more units.
  • They make gifting easy: boxes and sets solve the purchase during key seasons.

The key point

A bundle isn't just a discount: it's a way to sell more to someone who was already going to buy from you. That's why it's one of the most profitable levers to increase the average order value in Shopify.

How to create bundles in Shopify (all the options)

Option A — Shopify Bundles, the native app (free)

Shopify has a free, official app called Shopify Bundles, available on every plan. It creates fixed bundles and multipacks and — importantly — draws down the inventory of each product separately, so your stock doesn't get out of sync.

But it has real limits worth knowing before you commit to it:

  • It doesn't apply discounts on its own — the bundle price is the sum of its parts unless you add automatic discounts separately.
  • It doesn't do mix & match or "build your own box", nor a step-by-step bundle builder.
  • It doesn't allow volume pricing or quantity tiers.
  • A cap of 30 products per bundle and the standard limit of 3 options per product.

It's a good free foundation for simple fixed sets. If you need discounts, customization, or tiered quantities, you'll fall short.

Option B — Native automatic discounts

Shopify lets you create automatic discounts (for example, "buy 3 and save 10%") that apply on their own at checkout, no coupon needed. They work for quantity promos and basic BOGO, but they don't provide the visual experience of "build your combo" and don't pair well with product selection.

Option C — A manual "combo" product

You create a new product that represents the bundle and give it a special price. It's free, but rigid: your inventory gets out of sync (you sell the combo but the stock of the individual products doesn't drop) and maintaining dozens of combos by hand becomes a headache. We break it down in how to create kits or combos in Shopify for free.

Option D — A no-code app like Comboo

Comboo is a Shopify app that lets you create customizablebundles and kits — including mix & match and volume — with automatic discounts that apply on their own at checkout, without you touching any code. It's free during launch and covers exactly what the native app doesn't.

It works in 3 steps:

  1. You create the bundle — pick the products, set the minimum/maximum, and choose the pricing or discount type.
  2. You add it to your theme — insert the Comboo block with one click, no code required.
  3. You sell more — the customer builds their package and the discount is applied automatically.

Tips for bundles that actually convert

  • Give a clear reason: "save 15%", "your complete routine", "gift it ready-made".
  • Pair a hero product with add-ons you want to push.
  • Show the savings clearly — the customer needs to feel they're winning.
  • Reduce friction: the fewer steps to build the bundle, the better it converts.
  • Protect your inventory: use a solution that draws down the real stock of each product.

Remember

A bundle only sells if people see it. Make sure you're driving traffic to your store — we explain it in this article. And if you want the fastest route to offering them without code, start with Comboo.

Frequently asked questions about Shopify bundles

What exactly is a bundle?

A bundle is a package of two or more products you sell together as a single offer, almost always with an incentive (a discount, a special price, or added value). You'll also hear it called a combo, kit, set, or pack: the idea is that the customer buys more than one item and feels they gain something for doing so.

Does Shopify have a native bundles feature?

Yes. The official 'Shopify Bundles' app is free and creates fixed bundles and multipacks, drawing down inventory for each product separately. But it's limited: it doesn't apply discounts, doesn't support mix & match or 'build your own box', has no volume pricing, and caps out at 30 products per bundle. For those you need an app like Comboo or automatic discounts.

Do bundles throw off my inventory?

It depends on how you build them. If you create a manual 'combo product', yes — your stock gets out of sync (you sell the combo but the inventory of the individual products doesn't go down). Shopify's native app and apps like Comboo draw down the inventory of each real component, so your stock stays accurate.

How is the bundle discount applied at checkout?

Through Shopify's automatic discounts, which apply on their own at checkout without the customer entering a coupon. Apps like Comboo create and maintain that discount for you — including quantity tiers — without you touching any code.

Do bundles help raise the average order value?

Yes — it's one of the fastest levers for increasing AOV (average order value): instead of one unit, the customer takes two or three in the same purchase. Since you're not relying on more traffic, the margin on that extra sale is usually very profitable.

Do I need to know how to code to create bundles?

No. With a no-code app like Comboo you add the block to your theme in minutes and configure everything from a dashboard. If you do it fully manually, you'll probably have to edit the theme or set up discounts by hand every time.
